Naked Humans in UE4

..UE4 or Unity? We’ve been testing UE4 over the last few days. Incredibly powerful real-time tool set, there is not doubt. It’s very easy to import scans in quickly and to bake lighting.


To get in the mood, please check out this track:

There are some drawbacks with UE4 currently:

  1. It doesn’t support Forward rendering.
  2. SSRR is broken in VR mode.

Without forward rendering we cannot port our awesomely realistic skin shader from Unity. UE4’s skin shader is lacking.

Reflections (ONLY)

SSRR only works in mono 🙁 as it’s a very intensive post processing effect. SSRR’s effect really grounds in objects to their environment, as it can simulate intereflections really well. I would imagine it can be activated in some way through an ini file or a hack but it will bring the frame rate down to about 20 FPS. Without this effect UE4 VR demo’s are really lacking that extra punch of realism. You will notice this in all the on-line video demonstrations.

Hopefully Epic will be adding Forward rendering support in the coming months (?) as well as better synced MSAA in stereo and SSRR in stereo with speed optimizations.

We want to use UE4, we need to use UE4 because at this point in time Unity just cannot match the interior rendering capabilities of UE4. Similarly, UE4 at this moment in time cannot match Unity’s powerful custom shading options.

Here are some examples of some naughty naked scans in UE4. These scans are not supposed to be viewed and rendered with this shader, they will look harsh as there is no absorption of light into the skin. Using our custom skin shader in Unity they look much tastier.’s as if the “RealisticRendering” room was made for this very purpose! 😉

To view these peeps in VR, set your desktop to 1280×800 and look through the Rift!

It takes minutes to set-up these rooms with the scans. I’m very confident we can make some great looking environments with UE4 …IF we can get Forward rendering support for better skin shading.

Product Release

We are close but yet still quite far from release, we are aiming to have something ready for DK2 launch. We could release some scan products soon, in empty environments. It all depends on the demand?

    What is the need to wait for DK2 launch? Launch now! 🙂
    At least i’ve tested your previous demo (in addition to Rift’s test) on ordinary monitor, TV, Sony HMZ glasses(winner of that tests), hi-end/low-end machines.. well.. it looked great in each case! Even low-end PC showed acceptable result. Your potential audience is not only DK owners! Each and everyone enthusiast of visual pleasures(in good meaning) will join you! You creation is amazing! Share it with other already! 😉

      Yes we do really. Honestly these experiences are REALLY designed for VR. They can be viewed in 2D mono but it will ruin the experience 🙁 Seeing them in stereo with depth is quite something. Thanks for your passion and interest we hope to please everyone with as a high a quality product as we can.

    First of all:Great Job,looks really awesome!Even in 2d.(Im still waiting for the public release of the rift)

    But you are right,shader of the UE is not as good as Unity.The skins look a bit like plastic.
    Why not try Cryengine?

      Thanks. Yeah the pre integrated skin shader is pretty bad. CryEngine doesn’t have great support for the Rift just yet. Still early days allround.

    Demand? I know ppl would pay whatever price you set and for any new content even models in empty room as you mentioned. $10,20,30,40,100… Just release something and see for your self the demand. IMO you should release something like $20-30 per girl pack and give rights to upgrade to the final version to be released for DK2. Hell, even like $100 for 5 girls with upgrade? or even a $30 subscription model and release something each week? Right now there is nothing like this available. Pretty soon (Q3) we’re gonna have Playgirls3D and I bet big porn companies will join the market.

      Ahh yes thanks, I remember. We follow them on Twitter. They use more basic scanning techniques with Artec scanners. Looks like fun though!

    Nice update! But one more question… Is it “only” a game where you can watch naked girls without any animations or will you add sexuell content like female-male action? like 3d sexvilla or something like that.
    Here I’ve found something about Playgirls3D which BobVR talked about…

      It’s more of an experience, rather than a game. Frozen moments in time, with maybe some slight limb movement and breathing. Maybe sometimes eye follow. There is no technology that exists today that could pull of real moving humans in VR in real-time. There is no way to calculate skin sliding / rolling, muscle, fat, bone, tendons etc. Even companies like ILM and Weta have problems doing it off-line with VERY big budgets. We don’t have the resources or budgets for that. We are trying to aim for something more realistic than sexvilla. Thanks for the link.

    Great work! Having an actual room where the scans are in makes a huge difference to me. I really like seeing the room lighting. Maybe you can put a light switch on the wall where we can walk up to it and dim the lights etc,

    Glad you gave UE4 a chance and now now exactly what limitations you run in to. Hopefully these limitations will be resolved soon since VR is getting so much attention.

    I also searched Google for playgirls3d and came up worth nothing. Maybe BobVR has more details for us.

      Thanks. UE4 just isn’t quite ready yet sadly. Maybe in 6-12 months but we want to launch before then. So the initial demos will be with Unity and might be quite sparse but the focus is on the girls more than the environments. Hopefully that will change once VR becomes more developed for. Then we can maybe switch to UE4. If they support adult content in their license agreement!!

    If your new demo would not be compatible with the DK1 a lot of people would miss out. I, as many others have bought the dk1 as a preview experience, and am planning to buy CV1 when it comes out. I am really curious about the animations you have been working on, so I am hoping that the next demo that you will release is still DK1 compatible.

      The day they opened up for orders. Once their payment system was working, so we might miss the first 5000 batch because of that error. We have 3x on order.

      We’re working on it! All of our previous scripts need changing as the DK2 is a very different system. This will take time.

    Regarding CryEngine, I know Cloud Imperium Games has been working closely with CryTek on getting the Rift working in CryEngine for Star Citizen. Maybe some of that will filter back up to the root distribution.

      Yes, and then we found out how buggy the SDK was and what a nightmare it’s going to be to upgrade. We are working on it.

        Seriously, today anyone with a DSLR can take a dozen of pictures of a naked woman, throw them at Photoscan and create a basic (and really poor) 3D model, then assemble it in Unity using basic shaders and consider the job done.
        Your work is visibly polished and careful about details from the very beginning, from your capture rig, mesh clean-up, texturing, skin shaders… That’s the art of it. “God is in the details”, some say, and you are doing it brilliantly.
        On top of that, there’s the new buggy 0.4 SDK.
        In conclusion, as anxious as I am to see the results of your work, pressuring you is almost a sin.
        Let the artists work with no pressure! 😀

        PS: In my previous post, I meant that “art takes time”, not “art takes take”. Sorry about that.

    DiVR thanks i think what you descript is really correct, it is only that there is no product out there that is even Close to what Veiviev delivered with their early Demos and we just can’t wait what else they could Show us. Perhaps we are also just afraid to read once that pecause of Out of Money the Close and not publish the product and that more than bad as many People would Support und pay for it. Me included.

      Not with UE4 no. It still doesn’t have hybrid forward rendering support and their SSS shader wasn’t as good as we had hoped. We are sticking with Unity for the time being.

      If you mean the UE4 interior tests, they wont be released. They were purely for research as they are not practical to use. Too slow. We’re hoping to create something in Unity5 in a few months.
