We need your help! Do you own a GearVR? Would you like to help us beta test our early MVR demo?
MVR beta demo
Note the potatoe quality? This was streamed using Mobizen to a PC, then Open Broadcaster Software used to screen capture. As far as we are aware there is no other decent way to record or stream video out from the Samsung Note4 and GearVR. We really need a micro usb 3.1 type c output from the GearVR to connect to a PC to stream data.
Or an internal way to capture data without it disrupting performance.
Sadly in the video you will see a lot of judder due to Mobizen streaming the video out by wifi. We tried using a female to male usb 3.1 type c extension cable to plug into the GearVR to record video externally but Samsung have made a cheeky modification to the male connector on the GearVR, which wont allow connections to other female connectors.
We could have then ‘possibly’ used an external DSLR to video record the screen but no doubt the gyro and rotation would not work. Unless we strapped the phone to a video camera!
If you know of another way to record HD video from a GearVR please let us know.
Now …down to the nitty gritty. Side loading : /
Since the apps cannot be distributed through the Gear VR store, players will need to side-load the app.
We have tried to put together a comprehensive package to ease the side loading process, it wont be easy. Please let us know how you get on and spread the word if you can. The more GearVR users the better. We should then be able to start to develop actual products to distribute.

(Please download our tool, and download Visual C++ Redist 2010 if you don’t already have it)

Content in the demo
This is a VERY basic demo. Essentially just a viewer at this point and will contain models from this VRGIRLZ product – http://www.vrgirlz.com/vrgirlz-11-saph-bvr.html
In case you don’t have a game controller we have designed the MVR’s to utilize the GearVR’s side touch-pad for basic navigation and scan interaction. It’s not easy to use but the support is there. We recommend using the Note4 and GearVR in combination with a blue-tooth compatible game controller. Like the Amazon Fire game controller.
As you can see this isn’t an easy process. If you decide to try and test and have any difficulties please let us know. Send any questions you may have, it may take us some time to answer.
It should just be purchase, download, install!!
If you have found the procedure too hard to accomplish you could always write to Oculus – firstname.lastname@example.org requesting to support us and other developers on this side loading issue. The closed wall garden approach to software development will really restrict ‘innovation’ for mobile VR.
This beta test will help us figure out how to move forwards with distributing MVR products to GearVR users. We have lots of content that we would like to share but the Oculus store is currently blocking this distribution process. We understand why those measure are in place, possibly because of Samsung and Facebook’s policies about adult content.
Hopefully we can solve this issue, together.
