Lucid Dreams V2

Welcome to Lucid Dreams V2. The first FREE beta demo from Veiviev Limited. This is work in progress, a test for all the VR Pioneers out there to try. We want your feedback.

Lucid Dreams V2

To get in the mood, please check out this track:

We’ve rushed the release, so please bare with the sparse post and possible buggy demo. It’s very early work in progress. But something fun to try out before our new VR store opens. Which will be very soon.

This demo has been designed purely for the Rift. To really experience the sense of scale and character presence, it should be viewed in VR (true 3D)

You WILL need a powerful machine to run this demo, it has NOT been optimized at all. This is a very early beta demo.

It’s very rough around the edges. On a solid modern gaming system it’s possible to sustain 60fps consistently in VR mode with V-Sync on (recommended) There will be a slight drop in the Entrance Lobby to 40-50fps.

By Downloading the files you are “confirming you are over 18″ and “comfortable with viewing adult scan content”.

Ok, I have it figured out now. I can’t rotate any of the models unless I clone them. I can only rotate the clones. Maybe that is by design?

Will there ever be a setting for better textures or is this the maximum? Right now they’re pretty blurry.

    • veiviev
      March 19, 2014 at 5:08 pm ·

Can you prove that with a screen shot? They are 8k textures! Unity only natively supports 4k. What we have right now is already pretty taxing for even the most powerful cards.

This is fantastic! Can’t wait to see some animation. I’m assuming the “promotions” bit is currently unavailable? I couldn’t figure out how to select any of them.

Curious, will there male models in the future, for co-ed visualizations?

    • veiviev
      March 19, 2014 at 5:08 pm ·

We have animations working here. Unity is just slow rendering 2x on screen at once. Males may come in the future. If we can hire anyone willing enough to shoot them!

Very cool demo! Can’t wait to see how things progress. There were a couple things I’d have liked to see.

    1) The ability to keep myself planted to the floor at the same eye-level. Whenever I looked up the moved forward, I was suddenly flying. The ability to toggle that and/or to reset myself to the ground would be nice.

    2) The ability to scale models up or down.

      Try it :)

I was using the ICD scale a lot, but also wanted to scale individual models up and down. Some short, some tall, some really tall haha. VR is going to be amazing for folks like myself who are into macrophilia and microphilia.

Yay, it’s finally here. I just gave it a quick spin last night and here’s a few wants and wishes from me:
    – Rebindable keys. I’m a bit weird and still use a sort of unorthodox setup from way back when one of the first games I played used right mouse to walk and W to jump. Would love to be able to rebind those (and the others) as 15+ years of muscle memory is hard to get rid of.

    – I found the collision detection to be a wee bit too aggressive. Just trying to fit more stuff on the screen was difficult as the “hit boxes” were a bit too large IMO.

    – I would like different lighting setups like in your previous demos. This was a bit sterile and doctors office looking for my taste.

    – When moving models around I think that maybe instead of you moving along with the model it should move on its own. I’m not sure on this one so maybe make it a toggle?

    – Some sort of visual feedback during cloning of models would be nice. I kept hitting the button over and over, moving closer to the models, turning the cursor on and off and finally thinking “oh well, maybe they stripped that from the demo”. Then I turned around…

    – Support for a SpaceMouse would be cool.

    – I’d prefer it if direction of movement wasn’t tied to the direction of my head. In real life if I’m looking down and start walking backwards I don’t start to float into the sky.

    – Some manual touch up of the eyes would be nice. The dead concave eyes are a bit disconcerting.

I know this was mostly negative feedback but I’ll end this by saying that you have something fantastic in the making here. You’re going to be rich and my unemployed ass is jealous ;)

Great job, glad someone is actually gonna start implementing this, and even the ads seem like thy will be unobtrusive if it is all done properly. Controls, I’m thinking at least for those many who will simply be using traditional computer monitors to view need to sway more toward “mouse-only” camera manipulation.

Zoom forward with left mouse, backward with right mouse, middle mouse to adjust orientation and then adjust altitude again with left and right mouse clicks, simple three button method, or utilize and on-screen “navigation ball” that you manipulate with your cursor and other onscreen camera adjust buttons.

Just a FYI for trouble shooting
I was just getting a black screen on my laptop
    running a i7-4700MQ 2.4 GHz, 12 gig of ram, Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit
    GeForce GTX 770M

It did crash and rebooted my system when I first ran it from my desktop. It must have screwed up some of the demos settings when it did this.
I unzipped the files again and put them into there own folder and now it starts fine.
but I can not log in (firewall and antivirus is disabled so no conflicts there).
Do I need to be a beta tester to get a password?

thanks looking forward to the full version

Fantastic job! I have a beefy computer so it was always at 60fps. Very surreal, I kept feeling like some of the scans were blinking lol .All it needs now is some animations or interaction, like detecting where the camera is relative to the actress/actor. At this point the main limitation comes from the vr headset, which will go away in time.

    Some suggestions:
a button that slows the camera down.
    maybe slight specular on models?
being able to walk around the character with feet on ground

btw, if you ever decide to “optimize” this, please leave an option for higher spec computers so we can still experience the higher def :P

    • veiviev
      March 20, 2014 at 11:28 am ·

GREAT! This is how it should be run, on a good powerful PC. Next gen :) We have animations working, they look incredible but Unity can’t handle more than 1x animation on screen at once on high resolution meshes. We are working on our own fix for this. Thanks for your other suggestions!

    Looks really good.

    1. Lacks subtle movements to make models feel more real. Breathing simulation works, slight head movement, minor things like that.
    2. Lighting, lighting, lighting. Allow custom lighting. Some prefer darker lighting, more contrast. It hides defects better.
    3. Surface glossiness to make skin seem “wet”.
    4. Eye quality and eye movement… if you could make the model eyes look at you, that’d be terrific. It is amazing what good eye quality does for the sense of presence. Look at “The Last of Us”, that game has great eyes of the characters making it much more immersive.
    5. Even sound effects could be implemented very cheaply, just low and subtle “ahh” sounds or “ohh” when you’re close to a model. lol.

    • veiviev
      March 20, 2014 at 11:31 am ·

Thanks. We’re working on movements. Bare in mind the suggestions you mentioned cost money. Allot of money to produce, we don’t have an 8-9 figure budget like the “Last of Us”. So they will take time to implement. That’s why we are starting basic, if we get support from people, then ity will improve. Everything is self funded at the moment.

    • veiviev
      March 21, 2014 at 11:30 am ·

It’s to try and curb piracy as we are small indie developer. It would be easy to copy and share the demo without this. We are still looking into other solutions but at the moment this seems like the only way.

  44. airborn
    March 21, 2014 at 5:21 am ·

I get 1024×768, which doesn’t work on the Rift. I don’t know why it can’t just default to Rift-resolution (if it’s supposed to be for the Rift in the first place), or why we can’t just change the resolution in-game….

    • veiviev
      March 21, 2014 at 11:31 am ·

Again very odd. What is your native resolution? How do you know the screen changes to that odd resolution? 1080p is a far better experience in the Rift not 1280×800. What are your PC stats? How to you setup your Rift with your monitors, this will explain the problem.

      • airborn
        March 21, 2014 at 4:47 pm ·

It’s most likely my video card and multiple-monitor setup. But it doesn’t matter…I’ve seen several comments from people having trouble…we’re only asking for a way to change the resolution to suit US. I know “it’s a much better experience” but that’s subjective and if we can’t run it at all, it doesn’t matter! It’s better to support a wide user base instead of saying “this is what we do” — you’ll stay a small company with that attitude.

        • veiviev

It’s actually the general consensus of most Rift users that with DK1 1080p is a better experience, for various reasons :) But just for you we will make a special exception. How’s that? With the new update that’s coming we hope you will enjoy the “free” product and that it hasn’t been to much trouble for you.

Just for you anon, we’ve updated the latest version with the resolution menu. I hope that works. “— you’ll stay a small company with that attitude.” this was kind of being a dick. It’s always been our intention to add resolution UI controls but we are limited with time and resources it all costs money, adding a functional GUI system is very expensive. For now the ugly quick fix is using the default Unity UI.

    Nice demo, good work.

A simple suggestion for the eyes: Agree movement and such would be nice, but perhaps a simple way to bring some more realism in that area would be to touch up the textures a bit (edit out some eyelashes from the main textures basically), then add some 3D eyelashes in. A few simple lash mesh variations repeated/cloned/rotated/scaled (and shared between all models perhaps) shouldn’t take up too much extra computing resources with Unity. Think it’d add a nice touch of realism without too much work.

    March 22, 2014 at 1:42 am ·

This is actually more entertaining than I initially expected… there’s something very erotic and voyeuristic about the static models… be honest: haven’t many of us (at least in our teenage years) had the fantasy of being able to freeze time in order to “sneak a peak”? Along those lines, you could have a series of models that were in various stages of undress and self-pleasuring and play up the voyeuristic element.

Animation might enhance the experience, but if done hastily, it might break the immersion (the scans are amazing, but if the animation is robotic it will kill the current level of realism). I’m not saying you shouldn’t do the animation – you absolutely SHOULD, but you’re making the right call to take the time to get that right.

That said, even in this early stage I think you could monetize what you already have through purchasing additional models and poses.

IMO, nobody else is as far along as you are for demonstrating what is newly possible with adult entertainment through VR beyond the obvious POV 3D porn.

In short…. congratulations on an impressive accomplishment, and TAKE MY MONEY!

Thank you Tetsuo, it’s great to find someone with vision who was able to enjoy the hard work and years of research that went into this. I think in the right hands there is a lot of enjoyment to be had with these demos. One key thing that’s missing is being able to play your own music when in there as well as hand on skin, or Hydra on skin manipulation. Which we certainly plan on doing. Imaging skin sliding, pinching and physics. Hours and hours of fun :)

      • Tetsuo
        March 24, 2014 at 3:13 am ·

Indeed. At the risk of sounding creepy, I’d expand by saying that upskirt (with and without panties) and down-blouse models would probably be hugely popular with those people who already like the static models for the frozen-in-time voyeur aspect.

From the “coming soon” teaser in the existing demo, it looks as if you’ve already got one very short skirt in the mix, but that set looks more directly sexual rather than being candid (not that there’s anything wrong w/ that – the model is gorgeous!)

I suppose that in the case of blouses or other clothes that are loose and revealing enough to be interesting, you’ve opened up quite the technical can ‘o worms of trying to preserve the realism again… perhaps cloth physics for rendered/removable clothing would be somewhere on your to-try list near skin manipulation :)

I have already given superficial feedback, but now that I’ve had more time to think about this here are is my follow up feedback:

Static models are fine, as long as they do breath a little like in the “HydraDeck” demo.

But being static doesn’t mean they should be statues! In your demo the models are really statues on a pedestal. Your demo is more like a museum or art gallery. That may be fine for first looks, but will get boring eventually.

What the user really wants is to experience presence with the models, to have one of the model wrapped around the user, to sit on top of the user, to be lying down and spreading the legs for the user, etc. It depends on what the user wants. Some simply want to stand right next to a model, some even just want to be lying side by side to a model.
The models need to be oriented and positioned for the users comfort, in ehrm, “utilitarian” positions, to enhance presence and to enable the user to experience to the fullest. Lying down is one good position.
Each model should have a recommended position for the user.

One last thing. Fair skinned models where the sky is nearly white is not a good experience. The atmosphere needs to be darker and lighting conditions better to enhance shadowing and depth and put the emphasize on the models.

If you need further feedback contact me. I have many other suggestions.

    • veiviev
      March 22, 2014 at 5:30 pm ·

As we has described in the blog post, this is a voyeuristic experience, they are intended to be frozen moments in time, not everyone will “get” it or “enjoy” it. We expect that, it’s fine. We already have the ideas you listed and achieved from previous demos and plan to integrate them in the future. FYI you can already position and rotate the models ;) Thanks for your feedback.

These girls are great but I must say I was only interested in Joanne, I think I must have taken 100 pictures of her. The poses she does and the quality of her scans just seems to be above the rest, its almost as if the artist dedicated more time on her. But I do not blame him because I would have done the same, she just seems like a 10, the other girls not so much. She looks incredible with high-cut t-back outfits, more of those would be great… some shiny or pink latex maybe, “Realise” makes some good ones. Anyways, I hope you’re successful because nobody else seems to be doing anything close to this.

Meant that mainly for the current demo here, the seven static scans. For animated things and such, many many many scans to form them I know, so yeah would be a huge headache, not practical. Models just being a bit animate though ought to help significantly with realism on its own, so really only meant the suggestion for select static “showcase” models or such.

As a graduating student from a top-2 business school with experience in everything from the business side of software sales to investment banking and other financial services, I would recommend you shy away from the online-only subscription type service. I get the feeling Veiviev is leaning towards this and think a low priced offline model by model service implemented through a single program would be more efficient in preventing piracy while maintaining healthy sales.

This is a high volume of demand but low willingness to pay market. If the price is low enough per model/animation (say 1 – 5 USD each) then most who are only interested in one or two models will be willing to pay rather than pirate, while those who are less price sensitive will still be able to spend insane amounts in the store to experience everything Veiviev has to offer. Piracy with this kind of media is exceptionally easy regardless of the DRM due to screen capture. Yes, some of the presence is lost when you can’t rotate your head, but most would be okay with that. It also wouldn’t be hard to construct a viewer which would enable some limited head tracking (no positional or rotational tracking). Anyway, this is just my two cents, you’ll be making money off this regardless.

    • veiviev
      March 23, 2014 at 7:03 pm ·

Thanks. We wont be selling subscriptions. We will be selling 5-10 model packs. We need a license system even when selling at low prices as people will still pirate :( We have to cover ourselves, as the development costs a lot of money. What other system do you think we could use for protection? DRM seems the only viable option.

      • Robert
        April 5, 2014 at 2:06 pm ·

You just have to accept that piracy is a thing. There’s nothing you can do to protect yourself against it without spending insane amounts of time and money on it. Focus on ease of access and price. Just look at what has happened with the music industry. I’ll admit that I used to pirate all my music but since Spotify became available I don’t mind paying. It’s convenient, the price is acceptable and the selection is good enough for my tastes. I think the same applies here. Make it easy and cheap and the rest will follow. Another example is smartphone apps. They sell for a buck or two but the volume is insane.

Of course for you the volume isn’t there. YET. Don’t price yourself out of getting that volume going. VR is only starting, I think playing the long game will pay off.

        • veiviev
          April 5, 2014 at 9:44 pm ·

Thanks. We respect the ideas and sentiment. We already are aiming for the long game. It’s hard enough getting volume of downloads on a free demo, let alone getting people to actually part with money through a payment system. We are a good 2-3 years off a 100’s of million’s strong VR market similar to mobile (billions strong market?) We can’t just sell for a buck, unless we swamp users with adverts, does that sound appealing? We are trying to find the best approach. If we don’t secure ourselves in some way now, we will be out of business before we have even started. We live now in a generation that expect everything for free. As an example each individual scan costs in the region of £500 each to produce.

          • Robert
            April 6, 2014 at 7:23 pm ·

The app thing with a price of one buck was just an example of what volume does eventually. I don’t expect that kind of price here in the beginning of course. What I’m hoping is that you try to keep it reasonable. If I were to guess, the pain threshold for people will probably be somewhere sub $10-15 for a “standard” “no-name” model (ugh I feel like such a creep saying that about actual real life people…) with just a few static poses. I imagine “replayability” for this kind of content will be quite low for most people so that can also play a role in how much people are willing to pay. Who watches the same porn vid 50 times?

Volume will come. After all, at this point there’s only, what, 50k units out there? I’m betting most of those don’t even know you exist yet. With the arrival of CV1 and some aggressive marketing I’m sure you’ll see your numbers climb quite a bit :)

Of course, this is just me, some random armchair smartypants dude on the internet, spewing his personal opinions so take it as such. All I want is for you to succeed so that you can continue to create more content, get bigger and able to get famous models to line up (let me know when Scarlett Johansson shows up :D ).

This post made me smile. Very reasoned and well thought out. Thank you. Agree 100% with you. We are aiming for the $10-15, this will fall over time. The ironic thing is, we need the support of paying customers because that will enable us to provide far more cutting edge content, like rigged and animated models, scenes, playability etc and eventually the icing on the cake would be 4D scans. Thanks for your posts Robert.

Got to spend a little more time with this today. Really great work. As long as you guys continue to improve it, you will get my money.

With that said here are some suggestions that maybe you can do.

    1. Hair. I’m pretty sure that hair is a tough one for you since it isn’t easy to get a good photo of hair with all the strands etc. I assume that is also why all of the models have their hair up. I’ve seen some really good 3D hair on models before, maybe you can somehow replace their hair with 3D hair. That way we can have long hair. (or better yet, make is so we can choose the hair!)

    2. Eyes. Maybe you can do the same with the eyes.

    3. I assume you have to pay these models, I think it would be well worth the extra money to pay for the girls to go get a manicure and pedicure before taking the pictures. Some of them have need some touchups in the nail department. French manicure on hands with red or pink toe nails is hot.. (just sayin’) =)

    Thanks and good luck!!!!

As far as animation goes, couldn’t you do something like they do in the below videos? I assume at some point you only need to make a 3D model of each model and then you can pose them however you like. The second video is crazy!

    • veiviev
      March 23, 2014 at 11:25 pm ·

Not really no. It’s not as simple as you would think. As soon as you start to animate our do anything more than simple breathing or swaying animations realism breaks down. To make believable moving digital humans you need to simulate flesh, fat, muscle, bone, cloth physics and use expensive motion capture. Even triple A game titles and expensive visual effects companies struggle with virtual humans and they have huuuuuge budgets.

Simple breathing and swaying, we can do.

Liked this much more than I thought I must say and it immediately reminded me of the film Cashback. Not to say that the more sexually explicit poses weren’t pleasing, but it was definitely very tasteful and artistic. More erotic than any porn film I’ve ever seen for sure. Job well done.
My biggest gripe is definitely the overall atmosphere though. The bright lighting and the empty space didn’t do much for me. But I’m guessing that’s already in the pipeline for you. Not sure how realistic it would be, but a virtual screen in the background for custom video or a slideshow, similar to VR Cinema, would be a fantastic addition in my opinion. Performance wise I was surprised it ran as well as it did after reading the description. My setup isn’t that beefy (i5 3.2 GHz, GTX 660ti, 8Gb Ram) but I didn’t have any framerate hiccups whatsoever.
Anyway, overall a fantastic vision and technology and I’ll definitely be coming back when you launch it officially.

Will Facebook’s buy out affect you guys at all? Do you think they’ll try to do any “no adult content” type of nonsense? Or I guess it’ll probably be like a normal monitor; they only control the hardware, not what you view with it, eh.

Great scans, good as the hydra stuff from the first rev of this (maybe not you guys but the scans are similar). I am not crazy about the cloning (it’s a lot of effort for little gain). What I’d suggest is small 12 inch high virtual models on a table (cool futuristic table) and you can focus by looking at one. Then some button press makes it show up to the right or left of the table full size. Then just manipulate that like you can with clones. Also, let people mess with scale. I want small, or gigantic models. Last bit, the walking through the virtual home part at the beginning… meh. Everyone wants the adult stuff, why pad it out. Put that 3d table right there in the center if you want with your ads in the surrounding walls. Also, make it dimmer. Not sure how many brightly lit strip clubs you’ve been to but most i’ve been to are dark.

Keep it up guys, good stuff. The scans are great.

    • veiviev
      March 29, 2014 at 1:49 pm ·

Thanks. Hmmm not sure on these suggestions. You can already play with scale, ICD , . keys. You can also flip the scans. Not sure about a table idea. More lighting demo’s are on the way. Cloning will stay, this allows users to view the scans from any angle, quite a neat feature. Once you get a handle on the keys, it’s very easy to use.

I think that the big problem are the textures when you get closer, they really look veeery low res textures at close distances, it kills the illusion.

    • veiviev
      April 3, 2014 at 9:30 am ·

They are already 8k textures! It’s impossible to go any higher. In the Rift it’s really not that noticeable on DK1. We recommend to view them in VR. Thanks. Which software version did you use? 32Bit or 64bit?

      • SomeoneElse
        April 9, 2014 at 2:26 am ·

I don’t think the textures need more resolution, but maybe it should be done like in Google Earth, when you’re at high altitude an image is loaded for that specific altitude, but when you get closer to the ground new more defined images load. This should be applicable to this, when you get closer to the model a new image should be loaded, a closer photograph of the area you’re getting close.

        For example, these two images:

The first one is a photo of an entire model, is high resolution, but if you get too close it will eventually show blurry, because is a photo of the entire model.

The second one, same resolution, but much closer, so you can see more detail if you get close and you will not suffer so much blurry effect.

In brief, what I’m telling is to use various photos on the models, 8K photos of the entire body when you’re far, and 8K close up photos when you’re near. Something like Google Earth when you zoom in.

Asking to your question, I was using 64bit version, very very smooth FPS.

        • veiviev
          April 9, 2014 at 8:44 am ·

Skin compared to google earth, they are very different things. We are already at the maximum resolution that the DSLR’s can capture. On a fixed camera system it’s impossible to get close to the subject without DOF blur. There is no more resolution apart from faking a tiled texture. We already do micro normal bump mapping on the skin shader and lighting versions this may help. Thanks for the ideas.

  87. Hugh
    April 3, 2014 at 5:22 am ·

Considering all other adult games seem to be either anime style or absurdly low-res, what you’ve produced-even in beta-is a considerable leap forward.

Ran smoothly (i7 and GTX580), solid 60fps with no glitches or lag. Models did get quite blurry very, very close up, but to be expected really, and still an impressive overall experience. I can’t wait to see this evolve (hopefully into XXX).

I would also discourage using always-online DRM because many (myself included) think it’s unreasonably punishing to the end user, making them less likely to purchase. I’d much rather see DRM in the form of key authentication over the Internet ~once a week at the most. I’d also suggest keeping the price low, because at the end of the day you actually make more $ from a higher volume of sales (the Humble Bundle is good evidence of this).

    • veiviev
      April 3, 2014 at 9:32 am ·

Thanks. Do you have a Rift kit? Did you view them in VR? Which software version did you use? 32bit or 64bit?

DRM at the moment is the only way we can do it, if don’t piracy will be rampant, we hope to work on other methods. Online DRM for the moment.

Keeping the price point low, we are aiming at £9.80 to $24.50 it depends what’s in each product. These models cost a fortune to produce (£100’s each) and the current demand is very low. Over time, prices will reduce.

Sorry to say but your demo is really flawed when using the Rift. When I turn my head the bodies move with the camera. it produces a warping effect that is terrible for presense. Changing IPD with the comma and period keys to the full extents do not fix this problem. Please fix, or provide instructions to correct this warping as its unusable for me. I use 3dx chat no problem and its wonderful.

the scene looks ok when my head is still, but as soon as i rotate my head the objects in the outer 2/3 of the view look like they move/warp in space. its kind of like you have projected your rendering on to a spherical screen around the viewer. are you using a neck model for head rotation or are you just rotating on a point? its definitely wrong because i know how it looks in other demos and games. i have tried it on two different systems with the same results.

If you could provide a video or image examples we might be able to help. It might be some odd configuration your side, or perhaps your Rift. We’re using the same rendering method we used on many other previous demos, which were quite well received without any issues like you suggest. It’s also using the standard OVR integration that Oculus provide for Unity.

check your options and see if “macroscopic mode” (or something starting w/ “m” is ON or OFF. You toggle it with the F3 key. I believe it toggles a spherically-distorted 2d render mode that is just as you described. Handy for moving/positioning the models, perhaps? I’m not sure why it’s in there, but I’m 99% sure that’s what you’re seeing.

    • tetsuo
      May 6, 2014 at 10:26 pm ·

Sounds like its in the alternate display mode (can’t remember what it’s called) that is toggled by one of the function keys (bring up the menu – it’s plainly labeled on the center of the L/C/R panels in the menu). If you think 3dx chat is “wonderful” and are finding veiviev objectionable, I’m certain that something is awry…

once you get veiviev configured correctly, you should find that it is currently without equal in terms of model fidelity. Also, unlike 3dx chat, it has a working neck model so you can tilt your head to get subtle changes in perspective instead of just rotation.

Hi! On my new Windows 8.1 PC I downloaded the 64 bit version and I get this error:

Unable to load mono library from “Z:/Veiviev_Lucid-Dreams_V2/Veiviev_Lucid-Dreams_V2_Data/Mono/mono.dll” (error = 126).

I’ll try the 32 bit version to see if I can get it to work. And 32 bit work fine! How to fix this problem?

    An important detail

you must create a full control motion of the camera only with the mouse….. err… ehem… you understand what i mean, i need the other hand !

mouse left+mouse right = moving foward, backward and strafing on the camera position

no cliced = full camera rotation

centrer mouse click = horizont camera balance

2 things are ruining this for me:

    – No positional / rotation tracking of my head – That makes this very non-immersive compared to all the other rift demo. I’m not really VR IMO, just has the ability to render to a stereoscopic display. I’m really surprised the standard OVRCharacterController for Unity doesn’t just do this out of the box.

    – Everything is kind of blurry unless i close one eye. Not texture resolution, that’s incredible, but it’s like the two eye displays are too far or too close together. I feel kind of like im crossing my eyes but i still cant totally focus properly. I don’t have this problem with other rift demos.

    I’m using the DK2 rift.

These are 2 things I just think would make this more fun…
I’d like to see any kind of passive animation like breathing or shifting weight.
And don’t make the models red when they collide. I don’t know the point of that. I don’t care if they’re colliding, let me pose how I want and see the texture!

Great job though. Hope you guys keep the project progressing.

      August 5, 2014 at 12:07 pm ·

The demo isn’t designed for the DK2 Rift. It works fine on the DK1 with rotational tracking. We made them red on collision so people wouldn’t do nasty things with them.

I have this working for the DK2 which arrived the other day, well partially working. If you set the DK2 to extended mode first of all, make the extended DK2 desktop the right resolution and orientation (sometimes it’s not right by default, you might need to flip portrait/landscape for example)

Then download a tool called Default Programs Editor, you can edit your context sensitive right click menus in windows to add an option to launch all exe files onto your 2nd monitor (the rift) rather than your primary monitor. Download link and instructions to do this are on this youtube video

The login screen will be distorted as it doesn’t work in 3d, but the rest of the demo will work OK. The only thing not working is head tracking, you can tilt your view but the in game direction you face doesn’t track with head movement.

I like that this demo includes such high resolution textures and models they’re really detailed scans of the models, runs OK on my GTX580 (not running SLI at the moment to test the rift) I’d love to see mo cap in this or at least high quality animation of the models, i think as a service simply static models won’t be compelling enough to pay for.

    • veiviev
      September 7, 2014 at 4:34 pm ·

Thanks for the comments. This demo was made for DK1 so really isn’t suitable for DK2, we hope to release a new demo soon.

Regarding animation, they will be primarily static until we solve 4D scanning. Scans or low polygon models in general always look terrible when animated combined with motion capture, there is no realistic way to simulate fat, skin twisting, bone protrusion, dynamics, softbody, cloth all in one. Even high end games like BF3 or titles from EA lack realism and they have multi-million $ budgets!!. As soon as you start to animate real-time models the realism breaks. We are aiming for a frozen in time “Adult Erotic Madame Tussauds” type experience initially. It wont be for everyone’s taste.

I’am in game industry for more than 14 years. For todays technology it is not possible to animate this beautiful ultra high poly scans.Even with multi gpu SLI connection it is not possible. For me the result is perfect. I think this media as a replacement of classic 2D magazines like Playboy or Hustler’s 3D interactive version. Users don’t have to be in the borders of photographers. They have the ability of inspecting the beauties from infinite angels.Cangratulations again.

I suppose this is the reason the head tracking does not work for me? I’ll wait.

But loving it already. My impressions:
      1. Would love the possibility to view on a monitor too. Oculus 2 is still giving me headaches and this can be appreciated conventionally. Maybe even on android ;) ?
      2. A camera orbit control would be a nice option (disabling head tracking when in use). Or maybe I felt the need for it because i didn’t have head tracking.
      3. As mentioned before by others, I too did like previous demo with different lighting.
      4. I would rather it to be offline, but I understand the DRM need.
